The canal it called me from dusk 'til dawn
With a gentle breeze blowing I continued to fawn
I'd been chugging through locks where the canal waters lead
With my narrowboat life fulfilling my dream
Chorus:
And it's heave ho
Where the wild reeds grow
Through the country canals far and wide I can go
With a song in my heart and with my best pal
With my hand on first gear
And a boat full of beer
And with a great ‘Cheer’
I'll go sailing on the canal
Just sailing on the canal
Just sailing on them canal
From the big city churches to the villages so small
Navigating levels that rise and fall
With the moon on the water, with the fire outside
We'll be singing our shanties with the stars as our guide
Through locks and bridges with trees and hills
This peaceful life, it gives me the thrills
With the ship mates so loyal and a heart just set free
We'll sail navvy waters just you and me
When the day's nearly done, when the Sun starts to fade
Moving from sunlight to dapples of shade
Raising toasts to the life and the friends that we find
Cruising the cut our worries far behind
